Topic: The College and 19th Century Ethos
Presenter: Dr. Harold Tallant , Professor of History
Although Georgetown College officially traces its earliest roots to a classical academy established in the 1780s, Georgetown College was born as a Baptist institution of higher learning in 1829, amid a period of surging growth for evangelical religion known as the Second Great Awakening. Shaped by the culture of its time, the College was also sometimes threatened by that same culture, including the controversies over slavery and sectionalism that divided the United States during the Civil War era. Professor of History, Dr. Harold Tallant will highlight several aspects of our College dating to the 19th century.
